Did you know that there are spices aligned with your Zodiac sign? I recently discovered this fascinating topic. Going forward I will post about the Zodiac signs and the spicse associated with them on a monthly basis.
Cardamom is the spice associated with Aries (March 21st to April 20th). It is grown in wild tropical rain forests of India, Sri Lanka, China and Vietnam. Cardamom can assist with stomach problems, heartburn, it is an aphrodisiac and an antiseptic. Chewing Cardamom seeds is believed to calm the nervous system. This is the perfect spice companion for Aries because they are known for living life at a fast and sometimes hectic pace. Aries are very decisive and do not like to over plan. Famous celebrities born under the sign Aires include: Aretha Franklin, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Eddie Murphy, Celine Dion, Marlon Brando and Pharrell Williams to name a few. The most famous fictional character born of the sign of Aires is Gone With The Wind's Scarlet O'Hara. I use Cardamom paired with Cinnamon and Nutmeg. These three spices are staples in my recipes for apple pie, roasted sweet potatoes and I add them to my roasted chicken. Cardamom can be used to make a sweet or savory taste. What are your thoughts? XOXOXOX Dawn source: myherbsmag.com Congratulations to the Celiac Disease Foundation! It is also extremely versatile. It can be paired with foods that will compliment it as a breakfast, lunch or dinner side dish. Although I eat quinoa as a lunch or dinner side dish, I sometimes prefer to eat it in the morning. In lieu of using water, I heat rice milk with cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. After the cooking process, I typically select fruits to add to my Quinoa. Blueberries, Strawberries and Bananas are three of my favorites. Sometimes I add all of these fruits at the same time or I alternate between eating them over the course of the week.
Quinoa can be eaten hot or cold. You can opt to eat it with brown sugar, honey, white sugar, agave or nothing at all. For those of us with Celiac Disease, gluten, wheat allergies or intolerances, Quinoa is high in fiber. This makes Quinoa an excellent substitute for grains that contain gluten along with fiber. Give Quinoa a try and share your thoughts. XOXOXOX Dawn Despite popular belief, participating in a support group does not make you weak. In fact, it makes you stronger. It helps one to grow. It allows the sharing and exchanging of ideas, knowledge and resources. When we realize that we are one of many and not the only one, we feel empowered, safe and gain the confidence to express what makes us feel insecure (especially when it relates to food). There is a great benefit to having a support system. It provides emotional support and in the case of the Celiac Disease, Food Allergy & Intolerance support group, there is a greater understanding of food.
Let's all make a concerted effort in 2020 to gain a better understanding of the food that we eat. After all our relationship with food whether good or bad, happy or sad, healthy or unhealthy is one of the most important relationships that we will have in our lifetime. Here's to learning, laughing and loving in 2020. XOXOXOX Dawn Gluten free does not require you to miss out on dishes with noodles. Explore Asian Thai Red Rice Noodles is a great alternative to wheat noodles. This noodle is tasty and can be used in numerous dishes. In the video featured in this blog post, I used the Thai Red Rice Noodle to create a beef bowl. I hope you enjoy the video and the dish. XOXOXOX Dawn Halloween can be a great source of stress for both children with food allergies and their parents and/or guardians. There are numerous candies and chocolates that are prepared in the same facilities of the top allergens exposing these products to cross contamination. In some instances this can lead to serious health issues for children. The very thought of this issue forces many adults with children to dread Halloween and to limit their child's participation in events and parties. Enjoy Life Foods and No Whey Chocolates are two companies that market allergen friendly chocolates. In the video below I share tips for making Halloween allergen friendly. XOXOXOX Dawn Bare Life Allergen Friendly Coconut Hot Chocolate - Featured at the 2019 Nourished Festival10/9/2019 Please do not be fooled by this product's name. This is no ordinary hot chocolate. In addition to being allergen friendly and gluten free this product can be used in yogurt, baking, smoothies, mix with coffee and there are numerous other uses. Bare Life is a start-up company that is owned by two women. They have a product that taste great and I am certain that it will soon be displayed in numerous retail stores, but for now Amazon and their website is the place to shop. XOXOXOX Dawn CBD seems to be very trendy right now. To be honest, I know very little about the product. That is why I found this vendor at the 2019 Nourished Festival to be interesting. Andre Deayon also know as the Bee Ambassador provided an insightful interview regarding both his honey with CBD and the importance of bees to our ecosystem. XOXOXOX Dawn Americans seems to have a passive / aggressive approach to understanding and co-existing with people who have food allergies. On one hand, the food industry that caters to food allergies is a multi-billion dollar revenue source for thousands of companies. This industry has developed marketing campaigns that highlight the importance of understanding the seriousness of food allergies. It treats its consumer base as an important niche marketing group.
There is also another approach to the discussion of food allergies. It is part of human nature. It is our ability to make light of things. To make fun of ourselves. To be honest, we all love a good joke. However it appears to be trendy to make jokes about people who are allergic to certain foods. Food allergies are serious and yet people who suffer from them are made the butt of jokes. There have been instances where our desire for comic relief has made us lack compassion for those who become seriously ill as a result of these allergies and require medical assistance. Certain jokes about food allergies lead people to feel uncomfortable in social settings. They encourage teasing, bullying and other negative social behavior. I have personally encountered situations where individuals have been rude, insensitive and/or disrespectful remarks while expressing there lack of knowledge and attempts at poor human while discussing Celiac Disease and food allergies. As we enter the last quarter of 2019, let's move forward on a path the will ensure that Celiac Disease and food allergies are reviewed in a more positive and respectful manner.
